The biggest mistake guys make is overthinking the first text until they send nothing at all — or defaulting to a flat "hey" that gives her nothing to work with. A strong opener does three small jobs: it's personal, it's easy to reply to, and it carries a hint of your personality.

The simple formula

Detail + easy question + light tone. Reference something real, ask something she can answer in a sentence, and keep it relaxed.

That's the whole framework. Everything else is execution.

Examples that work

From a dating app

Pick the most specific thing in her profile and react to it — a hobby, a trip, a pet. "Your hiking photo from Zion — did you do Angels Landing? That trail is no joke." Specific beats "hey, how's it going" every time.

If you met in person

Open with a callback to your conversation so she instantly remembers who you are. "Hey, it's [name] from the coffee shop — the one who argued that Die Hard is definitely a Christmas movie." She'll smile before she even reads the rest.

Playful tease

A light, warm tease about something she said shows confidence without being rude. "Still can't believe you've never seen The Office. We need to fix that." Keep it warm — never mean.

Shared interest

If you both mentioned liking the same thing, lead with it. "Okay so you're into [thing] — I have to know, [easy question about it]?" It's the easiest hook to build on because she already cares about the topic.

What to avoid

  • Generic openers with zero context — "hey," "wyd," "sup."
  • Paragraphs. Keep the first text to a line or two.
  • Compliments only about looks — it's forgettable and everyone does it.
  • Asking five questions at once. One easy one is plenty.
  • Waiting so long that the moment goes cold. Send it.

The real goal

You're not trying to impress her with the first text. You're trying to get a reply. Make it easy for her to respond and you've already beaten most of the competition. From there, it's about keeping the momentum going — which is a skill you can learn.
